Welcome! Here is your portal to our Ellis Island/immigration research project.
The assignment:
The 4th Grade ELA Task: Ellis Island Experience You are going to imagine you are an immigrant who has just arrived in New York and is being processed on Ellis Island.
The Immigration Department is going to produce a pamphlet/ brochure for immigrants into the United States who are going to be entering through Ellis Island. You have been asked by the Immigration Dept to write an explanation of the Ellis Island experience and what happens when immigrants are processed. In this explanation you will also need to let the readers know why immigrants often refer to Ellis Island as “The Island of Hope”.
Now it's time to do some research!
Check out the bibliography (list of books on the subject) to see what texts might guide you in your research.
Use the Links page to explore other websites full of information on the topic of immigration.
Take notes and collect information as you go.
Once your reasearch is complete, you'll be ready to "put yourself in the shoes" of a new immigrant to New York and create your brochure!
